Getting to Unst takes effort: two ferry crossings beyond the Shetland mainland. From Lerwick, drive north to Toft (about 45 minutes), take the short Yell Sound ferry to Ulsta, drive across Yell to Gutcher (another 25 minutes), then the second ferry to Belmont on Unst (10 minutes). Both ferries run frequently in summer but reservations are advised at peak season — the small car decks fill up.
There is no road bridge planned in the near future, though a single fixed link to Yell has been discussed for decades. The small airstrip at Baltasound takes occasional charter flights but no scheduled passenger service. Plan your visit around the ferry timetables and check the weather: severe wind can cancel sailings, sometimes for a full day.
