The university gives St Andrews a livelier bar scene than you might expect from a town of 17,000. Market Street is the main pub strip; during term time (October to May) the streets fill with students in red gowns after formal dinners. Several pubs have been here since the nineteenth century and are genuinely atmospheric rather than tarted up for tourists.
