Getting Around

St Andrews is compact enough that you will walk almost everywhere. The three main parallel streets — North Street, Market Street, and South Street — run east to west across the medieval grid, and the cathedral, castle, Old Course, and harbour are all within a fifteen to twenty minute walk of each other. Sensible shoes are advisable; the old streets are cobbled.

The East Sands beach is a short walk from the cathedral; the West Sands (the Chariots of Fire beach) is about twenty minutes on foot from the town centre, heading northwest past the Old Course. The coastal path connecting the two headlands, running below the castle and cathedral ruins, is one of the best short walks in town.

Taxis are available from the town centre rank and by phone. Cycling is possible but the town centre cobbles are uncomfortable — a bike is more useful for exploring the wider Fife coastline. The Fife Coastal Path passes through the town and connects to Anstruther and the East Neuk fishing villages to the south.
