New Picture House

The New Picture House on North Street is an independent cinema that has been operating since 1930 and remains one of the few single-screen independent cinemas in Scotland still in regular use. The auditorium retains something of its original character — a proper old cinema, not a multiplex — and shows a mix of mainstream and independent films, with special screenings of classic and art-house releases tied to the university's film society programme.

For visitors, the NPH is worth knowing about as an evening option on longer stays, particularly in bad weather or on a Sunday when everything else closes early. The café bar in the entrance serves drinks and popcorn; the atmosphere before a screening is pleasantly neighbourhood-local rather than commercial-cinema bland. Check the listings online before visiting — its programme shifts between commercial and specialist showings week by week.
