The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews — the R&A — occupies a grey-sandstone Victorian clubhouse at the north end of the town, with windows looking straight up the 18th fairway of the Old Course. Built in 1854 to designs by George Rae, it has been the home of the senior club in world golf for nearly 170 years.
The interior is private to members and their guests; the exterior is open to anyone who walks across the Links. The R&A's annual Open Championship rotates between courses in the British Isles; St Andrews itself hosts the Open every five or six years. The British Golf Museum, opposite the clubhouse, is open to the public and covers the same history at greater length.
