The Dunvegan

The Dunvegan is a traditional Scottish pub on South Street with a long-established reputation as one of the better places to drink in St Andrews. It does not cater primarily to golfers or tourists — the clientele is a mix of locals, academics, and students — and the atmosphere is correspondingly more relaxed than the more prominent bars near the Old Course. The decor is dark wood and unpretentious, the whisky selection is decent, and real ales on tap include Scottish regionals.

The pub serves simple bar food at lunchtime — soups, sandwiches, the occasional pie — and is a reasonable option for a cheap, informal lunch. The garden at the back is used in good weather. In the evenings during term time it fills quickly, so arrive before 7pm if you want a comfortable seat.
