Cardigan Bay

One of Wales's richest wildlife habitats, with resident bottlenose dolphins

The bay that Aberystwyth faces is one of the largest in Wales, curving south toward Pembrokeshire and north to the Llŷn Peninsula. It is also one of the richest wildlife habitats on the British coast: a Special Area of Conservation, home to year-round bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic grey seals, and harbour porpoises, as well as excellent sea fishing.

Boat trips departing from Aberystwyth harbour offer the best chance of close dolphin encounters, typically running from May to September. The Ceredigion Marine Heritage Coast stretches along the entire bay, and the coast path north and south of town gives excellent views over the water. The bay is not safe for swimming in all conditions — the currents can be strong — but beach walking along the Ceredigion Heritage Coast is one of the great pleasures of a visit to Aberystwyth.

A story
Cardigan Bay holds the largest known population of bottlenose dolphins in the UK — around 250 individuals who use the bay year-round. Unlike the more famous dolphins off south Cornwall, these are not seasonal visitors; they live here permanently, and sightings are common from the pier and the seafront year-round.
