Porth yr Aur — the Golden Gate — is the medieval sea-gate at the northwestern corner of the town walls, where the walled town once opened directly onto the harbour. The arched passage, built in the late 13th century, is one of the two original gateways through the walls and is now home to the Royal Welsh Yacht Club, which has occupied the upper floor since 1847.
The gate is closed to general public entry, but the seaward view of its twin towers from the slipway across the channel is one of the iconic images of Caernarfon. The little quay just outside the gate is a good spot to sit with a coffee and watch boats coming in across the Menai Strait.
