Twthill

A short, steep walk from the town centre brings you to the top of Twthill, the rocky knoll that rises behind Caernarfon. The summit is barely 100 metres above sea level but the view is the best in town: the full sweep of the castle and walls below, the harbour, Anglesey across the strait, and on a clear day the peaks of Snowdonia to the south.

The climb takes about ten minutes from Castle Square. There is a short flight of steps from Tan-y-Coed and then a grassy path to the rock outcrop at the top. Take it at sunset, when the light catches the western face of the castle.

A story
On 2 November 1401, an English force was defeated here in a sharp engagement during Owain Glyndŵr's revolt against English rule. The hill takes its name from the Welsh 'twt' — a knoll or mound — and was used as an observation point in both the Roman and medieval periods.
