Europe > United Kingdom > Wales > Devil's Bridge
Devil's Bridge is a small place with one very good trick: three bridges, built in different centuries, stacked above a steep wooded gorge. The waterfalls below them are dramatic enough on their own, but the odd engineering pile-up gives the place a story that sticks.
Most travellers come as a day trip from Aberystwyth, and the best arrival is by the Vale of Rheidol Railway. The narrow-gauge steam train climbs inland through the Rheidol valley and makes the journey feel like part of the destination rather than just transport.
The bridges and falls are the obvious centre, but the surrounding hills give Devil's Bridge more than a single viewpoint. Hafod Estate has quiet walks through a designed landscape in the Ystwyth valley, and the old Cwmystwyth Mines add a rougher industrial edge to the same upland country. It is not a big base, but it is a very worthwhile spare day in mid-Wales.
