Buses
There is a frequent public bus service running between Malmok in the northwest and San Nicolas in the southeast, passing through Oranjestad, the hotel beach strip and the airport. Buses depart from Oranjestad's pastel bus station next to Royal Plaza. The network is reliable enough that many visitors get by without renting a car, especially if they're staying along the main hotel strip.
Taxis
Taxis are unmetered but government-regulated, with fixed rates based on a zone system. Drivers are required to carry a rate card, so you can confirm the fare before you get in. Taxis congregate at larger hotels and popular tourist spots. They can also be hired by the hour for sightseeing.
Car rental
You'll need a car to explore the interior, Arikok National Park, or the rugged windward coast. Both international chains and local agencies have offices at the airport and at the main hotels. Your home driving licence is valid; you must be at least 21 years old. Drive on the right. Speed limits are posted in km/h. If you plan to return the car at the airport, confirm that the agency has a drop-off point there before you rent.
Bikes and ATVs
Bicycle and ATV rentals are widely available for those who want to explore the island independently. Many of the trails in Arikok National Park are accessible by mountain bike or ATV.
