Practical Information

Currency

The Aruban florin (AWG) is the official currency, pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of approximately AWG 1.79 to USD 1. US dollars are accepted everywhere — you may actually find it easier to use dollars than florins. Most major credit cards work fine. ATMs are available at banks and in shopping areas across the island. Banks are generally open Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.

Visa requirements

Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK and most EU countries do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. All visitors must complete an Embarkation and Disembarkation (ED) card on arrival. Check current requirements for your nationality before travel, as rules can change.

Language

Papiamento is the local language and mother tongue. Dutch is the other official language. English and Spanish are both widely spoken; most people working in tourism will speak all four.

Electricity

110V AC, 60Hz — the same standard as the US and Canada. Flat two- and three-pin plugs are used. European visitors will need an adapter.

Climate

Average temperature is around 28°C (82°F) year-round. Aruba lies south of the main hurricane track and rarely takes direct hits, though June to November can bring cloudier skies and occasional rain. The northeast trade winds blow almost constantly, making the heat feel comfortable.

Emergencies

Emergency services: dial 911 for police, fire or ambulance. Hospital: Dr. Horacio Oduber Hospital is the main facility on the island.

Seasons and prices

High season runs from mid-December through mid-April, when prices for accommodation rise significantly. Shoulder season (May to July) and low season (August to November) offer lower rates, though the island is popular year-round.

Shopping

Most shops in Oranjestad are open Monday to Saturday, roughly 9am to noon and 2pm to 6:30pm. Aruba has extensive duty-free shopping, particularly around the port area in Oranjestad.
