Big-Game Fishing

Marlin and tuna fishing from Alice Town

Big-game fishing is what put Bimini on the map. The drop-off east of the islands brings deep-water pelagic fish — blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi, yellowfin and bluefin tuna, wahoo — within minutes of leaving the harbour. The Bimini Big Game Club, founded in 1936, still runs charter boats and hosts a calendar of annual tournaments.

Even non-fishermen will find the marina life at Alice Town interesting: it is one of the most concentrated sportfishing scenes in the Caribbean, and the boats coming back in the late afternoon to weigh their catch are part of the daily rhythm. Day charters can be expensive but split between four or six people are not unreasonable, and a half-day reef-and-troll trip is a good introduction.

A story
Bimini sits on the edge of the deep blue water of the Gulf Stream, which runs between Florida and the Bahamas — within a mile of the harbour the bottom drops to over 600 metres. Hemingway caught his first marlin here in 1935 and the Bimini Big Game Club has run the same world-record-class waters ever since.
