Better known as the Shark Lab, the Bimini Biological Field Station on South Bimini has been studying lemon sharks, nurse sharks and great hammerheads in the surrounding mangroves and flats since 1990. It is one of the longest-running shark research programmes in the world and a major reason the species is so well documented in this part of the Atlantic.
The lab runs public tours several times a week, with talks from the resident graduate students and a chance to see captured sharks being measured and tagged before release. The mangrove creeks behind the station are nurseries for juvenile lemon sharks and easily snorkelled — a good introduction for anyone nervous about the bigger animals on the offshore dives.
