A row of large flat limestone blocks lying in about five metres of water off Paradise Point on North Bimini, the Bimini Road runs in a straight line for almost a kilometre. Discovered by chance in 1968 by divers Joseph Manson Valentine and Robert Brush, the formation was immediately seized on as evidence of a lost civilisation — the fulfilment of Edgar Cayce's prophecy that Atlantis would rise again that year off Bimini.
Modern geology is more prosaic: the blocks are natural beachrock, fractured into rectangular slabs by the local jointing pattern. Even so, snorkelling along the road is the closest thing in the Bahamas to an underwater archaeology trip. The water is clear, the swim is shallow enough for beginners, and the line of blocks under the turquoise water has a strange precision that pictures don't quite capture.
