Pink Sands Beach

Pink Sands Beach runs three miles along the Atlantic side of Harbour Island, off the northern tip of Eleuthera. The sand really is pink — not a marketing exaggeration — and the shallow water shades from pale aquamarine to deep blue over a long offshore reef that keeps the swells gentle.

Most of the beach is backed by upmarket pink-painted villas and discreet luxury hotels, but the sand itself is public. There is no shade; bring sun protection. The shore is good for long walks, gentle swimming, and unhurried snorkelling. Reach Harbour Island by water taxi from Three Island Dock at the north tip of Eleuthera.

A story
The pink colour comes from foraminifera — microscopic single-celled marine organisms with reddish-pink shells that get crushed and mixed into the white coral sand. The shade is strongest at sunrise and sunset, when the low light brings out the rose tint.
