A tightly-packed fishing settlement on the small island of St George's Cay, off the north-western tip of Eleuthera. Spanish Wells is largely white, descended from 18th-century Loyalist refugees from the American colonies, and the local accent retains a strong English cadence.
The lobster fleet based here is one of the most successful in the Bahamas, and the town has the slightly improbable air of a Devon fishing village transplanted to the Caribbean. Reached by a five-minute water taxi from the dock at Gene's Bay. Wander, eat lobster, swim from the deserted northern beach.
