Taino Beach, a few kilometres east of Port Lucaya, has a strip of casual Bahamian restaurants that serve the real local food without the tourist markup. The conch vendors here — typically operating from open-air stands or trucks — sell cracked conch, conch fritters, and conch salad made to order: fresh conch chopped fine with onion, pepper, orange juice, and lime.
The conch salad in particular is an experience specific to the Bahamas — nothing like it appears elsewhere. It is prepared in front of you, and the balance of heat and citrus varies from vendor to vendor; asking for "medium" is a reasonable starting point. The beach itself is pleasant, and the food stands are busiest at lunchtime and in the late afternoon. Taino Beach is quieter and more local in character than Lucaya Beach a kilometre west.
