Lucaya Beach

The main resort beach in the Lucaya district, a kilometre of smooth white sand with calm, clear water. The beach is public despite fronting private resorts — access is straightforward from the Port Lucaya Marketplace area. Water sports concessions rent jet skis, kayaks, and paddleboards, and parasailing boats operate from the shore.

The snorkelling directly off the beach is modest — the more rewarding reef is reached by the boat trips that depart from the Port Lucaya marina. The beach is at its best on weekday mornings when the resort guests thin out. The adjacent strip of restaurants and beach bars makes it easy to spend a full day here without needing to venture far.

A story
The beach fronts the former Our Lucaya Resort, now operated as a large all-inclusive. In the 1950s and 60s this stretch of shore was part of the vision that Freeport's founder Wallace Groves had for a resort city: beaches as orderly as a golf course, lined with purpose-built hotels. The plan mostly worked, and the beach remains the polished, well-maintained version of that original idea.
