Bridgetown itself is not on a beach, but the nearest good swimming is a short taxi ride away. Carlisle Bay, immediately south of the city, is a wide, calm arc of sand sheltered from Atlantic swell by a headland. The water is clear turquoise, the bottom is sandy, and the bay is calm enough for children. The Boatyard beach bar at the northern end is the most convenient access point; there is also a public beach further along.
For a more pristine experience, head to the west coast: the beaches at Paynes Bay, Brighton, and Batts Rock are within 10–15 minutes of Bridgetown by taxi and are the classic white-sand, turquoise-water Barbados beaches. The south coast around Dover and Accra Beach (also called Rockley Beach) has more surf and more beach bars, about 20 minutes from the city.
