Getting Around

On foot. The historic centre of Bridgetown is genuinely walkable — the main sights, the Parliament Buildings, the Careenage, the synagogue, and Broad Street are all within a fifteen-minute walk of each other. The Garrison area is about twenty minutes further south; Queen's Park is ten minutes east of the centre.

ZR minibuses and route taxis. The public transport system is built around ZR vans (privately operated minibuses) and yellow route taxis, both of which are cheap and cover most of Barbados. Fares within Bridgetown are a flat BBD 3.50. The main terminal is at Fairchild Street in the city centre; from here you can get to most parts of the island. ZRs are fast but can be crowded and the music is always loud.

Taxis. Conventional taxis are widely available and relatively affordable by Caribbean standards. They do not use meters — fix the price before you get in. The tourism authority publishes standard fare schedules; most drivers will quote within that range. Useful for getting to the Garrison, Carlisle Bay, or the airport.

Car rental. Available from the airport and several city locations. Traffic in Bridgetown is heavy in the morning and evening rush hours; outside rush hour the city is easy to drive. Note that Barbados drives on the left.
