Cheapside Market

Cheapside Market is the main public market in Bridgetown, a covered building near the northern end of the historic centre where fruit, vegetables, spices, and dry goods are sold from early morning until afternoon. It is not the most photogenic market in the Caribbean, but it is the real thing: the produce is genuinely local, the prices are local prices, and the vendors know their customers by name.

The surrounding streets have a concentration of lunch counters — unlabelled or poorly labelled premises with a few tables and a chalkboard menu. These are where you get the best-value Bajan cooking in Bridgetown: cou-cou and flying fish for a few dollars, macaroni pie, chicken curry, souse (pickled pork in a lime and cucumber marinade). If you are not sure where to eat, follow the office workers. Market is busiest in the morning; the lunch counters peak around midday.
