Belize City Harbour

The city's working harbour and departure point for cayes and dive trips

The harbour is the practical and symbolic centre of Belize City's existence. The city grew up at the mouth of the Belize River precisely because of this sheltered anchorage, and it remains the hub for water taxis to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, dive boats, and the occasional cruise ship.

Walking along the waterfront in the early morning, when fishing boats are returning and pelicans are circling, gives a sense of the city's working waterfront character. The Swing Bridge, a short walk inland, is swung open at 5:30 am to let the overnight catch through. The cruise ship terminal on the southern waterfront brings a different crowd — day-trippers looking for organised excursions — but by mid-afternoon they've gone and the city reverts to itself.
