St. John's Cathedral

oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America, built 1812

The oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America, built in 1812 from bricks brought over as ballast in European sailing ships. The red-brick building has survived hurricanes and a changing city around it. Four Miskito kings were crowned here in the 19th century — a legacy of British colonial influence in the region.

The cathedral sits at the southern end of the Fort George peninsula, adjacent to the small Yarborough Cemetery where some of the colonial city's notable figures are buried. The interior is modest but well-maintained, with wooden pews and stained-glass windows. Services are still held here.

story: > The four coronation ceremonies of Miskito kings held here between 1815 and 1845 represent one of the stranger legacies of British colonialism. The Miskito Kingdom on the Caribbean coast of present-day Nicaragua and Honduras maintained close ties with Britain, and the Church of England church in Belize served as the ceremonial location because it was British territory. The last king crowned here, Robert Charles Frederick, died in 1864.
