Getting Around

Renting a car is the most practical way to explore the island. The roads are narrow and hilly with blind corners, and driving is on the left. A 4WD isn't necessary but ground clearance helps on the tracks to remote beaches like Smuggler's Cove. Note that you drive on the left — unusual for a territory where most cars are left-hand drive American models.

Taxis are available in Road Town and at the airport. There are also shared safari-style buses (open-sided trucks) that run the main routes. Hitch-hiking is common among locals and generally safe.

Ferries connect Road Town and West End to the other BVI islands and to St Thomas and St John in the USVI.
