Dildo is a small outport on Trinity Bay, about an hour west of St. John's, and it knows exactly why many travellers first stop the car. The name gets the laugh, but the town has done something useful with the attention: it has turned a pretty harbour, fishing history, and a proud local joke into a real day-trip destination.
The waterfront is the point. Boat tours head into Trinity Bay and around Dildo Island, mixing outport history with chances for whales, seabirds, icebergs in season, and cod-fishing stories. Dildo Brewing Company and Museum gives the town a lively centre, with beer, music, harbour views, and a small outport-history angle rather than just a souvenir stop.
Dildo is not trying to compete with Newfoundland's grand landscapes. Its charm is smaller and more social: painted houses, working-water views, a name locals have chosen to own, and enough sea air to make the detour from St. John's feel worthwhile.
