Creston sits in a broad valley in southeastern British Columbia, between the Selkirk and Purcell mountains and just north of the Idaho border. It is a small town, but not a blank one: wetlands, orchards, farms, wineries, a brewery, and the Crowsnest Highway give it a clear Kootenay identity.
The main reason to stop is the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, one of the province's great wetland landscapes. Boardwalks, dyke trails, viewing towers, and marshes make it easy to spend several hours with binoculars, especially during migration seasons.
In town, the Creston Museum gives useful local context, and the Columbia Brewery marks the town's most famous export: Kokanee beer. Creston works best for travellers already crossing the southern Kootenays, but if you like birds, fruit stands, quiet roads, and mountain-rimmed valleys, it earns its day.
