Long Beach

The longest beach in Canada at around 16 kilometres, Long Beach stretches in a wide arc of grey sand between Incinerator Rock and Schooner Cove within Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The waves here roll in directly from the open Pacific without a single island to break them, which is why Long Beach produces some of the best surf in Canada.

Surfing is the main draw for many visitors, with consistent swells from September through April being the prime season. Lessons and board rentals are available from several operators in Tofino. Beachcombing, birdwatching, and walking the shore at low tide are excellent regardless of season. The sand flats at low tide expose an entire ecosystem of sand dollars, hermit crabs, and shorebirds. In storm season (November–February), the beach is raw and dramatic, and the surf schools still operate for those willing to get cold.

A story
Long Beach was at the centre of one of Canada's first environmental battles. In 1970, the government announced plans to develop it with a resort hotel and golf course. The backlash was fierce enough that it helped push the creation of Pacific Rim National Park, which was gazetted in 1971. The beach has been protected ever since — one of the rare cases where a threatened coastline was saved in time.
