Whale Watching

Tofino is one of Canada's best places to see whales, and the industry is well established. Grey whales pass through in significant numbers during the spring (March–April) and autumn (October–November) migrations, while humpbacks and orcas are more occasional visitors. Several operators run departures from the main dock, with trips ranging from 2.5-hour speedboat excursions to full-day inflatable zodiac tours.

The spring migration in March and April coincides with the Pacific Rim Whale Festival, which brings talks, beach walks with naturalists, and whale counts. The waters of Clayoquot Sound are also good for sea otters, Steller sea lions, and harbour porpoises year-round. Book in advance during summer and the spring festival period. Dress for cold and spray regardless of the season — even in July, the waters here are bracing.

A story
Around 20,000 Pacific grey whales migrate past Tofino twice a year, making this one of the most reliable whale-watching destinations in the world. The spring migration (March–April) brings them northward to Alaska after wintering in Mexico's Baja lagoons; the autumn return (October–November) brings them back south. Some individuals, known as "residents," stay in the waters of Clayoquot Sound for the summer rather than completing the full migration.
