Silver Star Mountain Resort

Silver Star Mountain, 22 km east of Vernon, is one of British Columbia's top-ten ski resorts and a fully functional mountain village open year-round. In winter the ski area has 132 runs, two separate mountain faces (Vance Creek and Putnam Creek), and consistent dry powder from November through April. The vertical drop of 760 m is not enormous by BC standards, but the variety of terrain and the relative lack of crowds compared to Whistler make it a favourite for families and intermediate skiers.

In summer the resort reinvents itself as a mountain bike destination. Over 70 km of singletrack trails fan out through the forest, ranging from beginner-friendly cross-country loops to challenging downhill runs for which the gondola provides uplift. The village itself — a cluster of brightly painted Victorian buildings around a central plaza — is pleasant to wander regardless of season. Accommodation, restaurants, and ski/bike rental are all available on site.

A story
Silver Star's distinctive painted Victorian buildings — fire-engine red, canary yellow, bright blue — were the idea of resort founder Gordon Ackroyd, who in the late 1950s decided the mountain village should look like a Gold Rush town. He built the first structures himself and insisted every business that moved in match the aesthetic. The colour scheme has been maintained ever since.
