Vernon

North Okanagan city between lakes, ranchland, vineyards, and Silver Star Mountain.

Vernon sits at the north end of Okanagan Lake in British Columbia's sun-drenched interior, surrounded by three lakes, rolling ranchland, and some of the province's best vineyards. It is less polished than Kelowna to the south, which is part of the appeal — the beaches are quieter, the trails less crowded, and the pace noticeably slower.

In summer, Kalamalka Lake steals the show: the water shifts between vivid turquoise and deep blue depending on the light, earning it the nickname "Lake of a Thousand Colours." Silver Star Mountain Resort, a short drive east of town, draws skiers in winter and mountain bikers in summer. The historic downtown along 30th Avenue has a growing number of independent restaurants and craft breweries, and the weekly farmers' market is one of the best in the Okanagan.
