Pangnirtung

Inuit hamlet on Baffin Island's Pangnirtung Fiord, gateway to Auyuittuq and a serious art town.

Pangnirtung, usually shortened to Pang, sits on a fiord below hard Arctic mountains on Baffin Island. It is fly-in, expensive, weather-bound, and not a casual place to add to a Canadian itinerary. That is exactly why it feels so distinct.

Most travelers come because Pang is the southern gateway to Auyuittuq National Park, with park registration handled at the Auyuittuq National Park Office. But the hamlet is not just logistics. Uqqurmiut Centre for Arts and Crafts keeps Pang's printmaking and tapestry reputation alive, and Pangnirtung Fiord gives the place its extraordinary frame.

Do not come expecting easy tourism. Come prepared, listen to local advice, and build in weather days. If the sky clears over the fiord, Pang can feel like one of the most memorable settlements in the Arctic.
