Queen's University was founded in 1841, the same year Kingston became Canada's capital, and its Victorian limestone buildings are among the most handsome in the city. The Agnes Etherington Art Centre on campus houses a strong collection of Canadian and international work and is open to the public. The university's presence gives Kingston much of its energy — the student population nearly doubles the city's size during term, and the campus is worth wandering for its architecture alone.
