ByWard Market

Ottawa's oldest market neighbourhood, home of the original BeaverTail

Ottawa's oldest and liveliest neighbourhood, laid out in 1826 by Lieutenant-Colonel John By when he was supervising construction of the canal. The covered market hall on George Street still sells flowers, maple syrup, fresh produce and Quebec cheeses, and the surrounding cobbled streets are packed with restaurants, bars, fromageries and bakeries. It is also where you go for a BeaverTail — the original stand is on George Street. The market is busy day and night, and gets a bit rowdy on weekend evenings.
