Pelee Island

Lake Erie island and Canada's southernmost settled place, rich in birds, vines, and quiet roads.

Pelee Island sits in Lake Erie, low, warm, and separated from mainland Ontario by a ferry ride. It is the southernmost inhabited place in Canada, and that odd latitude matters: vineyards grow here, Carolinian species hang on, and migrating birds and monarch butterflies use the island as a stopover.

The best way to see Pelee is by bicycle. The roads are flat, distances are modest, and the island rewards slow movement: beaches, fields, windbreaks, limestone alvars, and the long points of Fish Point and Lighthouse Point. The Heritage Centre adds the human layer: Indigenous presence, settlement, shipwrecks, farming, and wine.

Pelee is worth the ferry if you want quiet island time rather than a busy beach town. Check sailing times carefully; the water decides more than the map suggests.

Bars and Cafes

Wine is part of Pelee's identity, and the island's vineyards are more than a side note.
