Grand Falls

Bilingual Saint John River town built around New Brunswick's most dramatic inland gorge.

Grand Falls, or Grand-Sault, is a small bilingual town in northwestern New Brunswick where the Saint John River suddenly drops through a tight rock gorge. The town is not large, but the falls and canyon sit right in the middle of it, which gives the place more punch than most service towns of this size.

Come in late spring or summer if you want the full show. The Grand Falls Gorge has lookouts, stairways, and a riverside walking loop, while Zip Zag turns the gorge into an easy little adrenaline stop. On Saturday mornings, the Grand Falls Farmers Market adds food, Acadian-country produce, and a bit of local life across from the water.

Grand Falls works best as a half-day or overnight stop between Fredericton and Edmundston, or as a detour from northern Maine. In winter, the town shifts toward cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Kahoutek Ski Club, so it is not just a summer photo stop.
