The grand old Bloor Cinema, a 1913 movie house, was restored and reopened in 2012 as the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema — North America's first cinema dedicated to documentary film. Its single big screen and balcony host a year-round programme of docs, retrospectives, repertory classics and Q&A nights, and in spring it becomes a main venue for the Hot Docs festival, the largest documentary festival on the continent.
It is a proper old-school cinema experience, marquee and all, and a cornerstone of the Annex's bookish, film-literate character. Worth checking the schedule whatever night you are in the neighbourhood.
