Things to Do

Toronto's signature sights cluster downtown and along the waterfront — the CN Tower, the Rogers Centre, Ripley's Aquarium, and the ferry across to the Toronto Islands for the classic skyline view. The big museums are a short way north: the Royal Ontario Museum with its crystalline Daniel Libeskind addition, the Art Gallery of Ontario reworked by Frank Gehry, and the eccentric Bata Shoe Museum. Casa Loma, a mock-Gothic millionaire's castle, sits above the city to the northwest.

But the real pleasure of Toronto is its neighbourhoods, each with its own character: bohemian Kensington Market and the Chinatown beside it, the boutiques of Yorkville, the Victorian streets of Cabbagetown, gallery-lined Queen West, and the lakeside boardwalk of the Beaches. The restored Distillery District and the buzzing Garden District around Yonge and Dundas reward an afternoon on foot.
