Getting Around

Toronto's public transport is run by the TTC, and a single Presto card (or contactless tap) covers all of it. The subway is the backbone — two main lines crossing at Bloor-Yonge and St George — and it is the fastest way to move north-south on Yonge or east-west under Bloor. Where the subway does not reach, the streetcars do: the red rocket lines along King, Queen, Spadina, and College are slow but they put you right where you want to be, and riding them is part of the city.

Downtown is walkable and flat, laid out on a grid that makes it hard to get lost. The PATH, a 30-kilometre network of underground walkways, links the downtown towers and is a lifeline in winter. Cycling has improved with protected lanes on Bloor and elsewhere, and Bike Share docks are everywhere in the core. Driving is best avoided downtown — traffic is heavy, the Gardiner Expressway clogs at rush hour, and parking is expensive.
