Mackenzie House

Restored Victorian rowhouse, home of Toronto's first mayor

Address 82 Bond Street, Garden District

A narrow Greek Revival rowhouse on Bond Street, the last home of William Lyon Mackenzie — Toronto's first mayor, newspaper publisher, and leader of the 1837 Rebellion. After years in exile he returned to the city, and friends bought him this house, where he died in 1861. The city museum has restored it to the 1850s, with a working print shop in the back that demonstrates the trade Mackenzie practised.

Costumed interpreters bring the period to life, and the house has a long-standing reputation as one of Toronto's more haunted buildings, which the museum leans into around Halloween. It is a small, quiet stop amid the towers of the Garden District.
