Shawinigan is a Saint-Maurice River city with a tougher industrial past than most Québec getaway towns. Hydroelectric power shaped it, and the best attraction, La Cité de l'énergie, turns that history into a proper visit rather than a plaque beside a dam.
The city also works because nature is close. Parc de l'Île Melville sits right by the falls and river, the Saint-Maurice promenade gives the downtown a good walk, and La Mauricie National Park is close enough to make Shawinigan a practical base for lakes, forest, and canoe country.
It is not as pretty as Québec's old St. Lawrence towns, but it has a strong identity: turbines, brick industry, river spray, and Laurentian forest just beyond the streets.
