Cayman Islands National Museum

The country's main museum, housed in the Old Courts Building on Harbour Drive — a wood-and-coral-stone structure dating from the 1830s that has been at various times the courthouse, jail, post office, and church meeting hall. The exhibits cover the seafaring, turtle-fishing, and shipbuilding history of the islands, plus a serious natural-history section with corals, fossils, and a 15-foot saltwater crocodile skeleton.

A good first stop for understanding why Cayman is the way it is — the islands had no permanent population until the 17th century, no road off George Town until the 1930s, and no economy other than turtles and shipwrecks until the bank-secrecy laws of the 1960s.

A story
The building was Cayman's first courthouse, jail, post office, and dance hall — all in the same room, all at different times of the same week. Trials in the morning, dances at night, the jail upstairs. The museum's old courtroom is preserved with its original wooden benches and a hand-cranked switchboard.
