The Don Juan tour is one of several coffee-and-cacao operations around Monteverde, and one of the better-run. Across about two hours you walk through a working finca and see how arabica coffee, cacao, and trapiche (raw cane sugar) are grown and processed by smallholders in this part of Costa Rica.
The tour ends with a tasting — fresh-roasted coffee, dark cacao made by hand on the spot, and a glass of guaro-spiked cane juice. Pickup from your hotel is included in most packages. A nice break from cloud-forest walking and a useful insight into the economy that supported Monteverde before tourism.
