Things to Do

The two big draws are the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the smaller, quieter Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. For a better chance of spotting the resplendent quetzal, the private Curi Cancha Wildlife Reserve is widely considered the best bet.

For the canopy itself, Selvatura Park and Sky Adventures run the area's best networks of hanging bridges and ziplines. A guided night walk is the easiest way to see sloths, kinkajous, and vipers. Smaller, easy-going stops include the Monteverde Butterfly Garden, the Serpentario, the Ranario frog pond, the Bat Jungle, and the Orchid Garden.

The Monteverde Cheese Factory is the Quaker community's original economic backbone and still produces good semi-hard cheeses. The Don Juan Coffee Tour walks you through coffee, cacao and cane production on a working finca. Off the road between Santa Elena and the main reserve, you can climb up the inside of the hollow Ficus La Raiz strangler fig.
