Puntarenas is a port on a sandspit, and what leaves it is the ferry to the Nicoya Peninsula and the day boats to Isla Tortuga across the Gulf of Nicoya.
The island cruise is the classic San José day at the sea: an hour and a half each way, lunch on the beach, snorkelling, and the crossing past the gulf islands, which is half of the point.
