Pacific port city on a sandy Gulf of Nicoya peninsula, with ferries to the Nicoya Peninsula.
Puntarenas is a port city on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, built on a narrow sandy peninsula that juts out into the Gulf of Nicoya. For decades it was the country's main Pacific port and a popular weekend beach destination for families from the Central Valley. The port has since moved to nearby Caldera, and Puntarenas has settled into a quieter rhythm — a working town with a long waterfront promenade, fish markets, and the slightly faded charm of a place that has seen busier days.
The city is the main departure point for ferries to the Nicoya Peninsula, and many travelers pass through on their way to the beaches of Montezuma, Santa Teresa, or Tambor. The Paseo de los Turistas along the waterfront is pleasant for an evening stroll, and the seafood is fresh and cheap — try a ceviche at one of the open-air stands near the ferry terminal. Cruise ships call here occasionally, and the nearby Isla San Lucas, a former penal colony, has been converted into a wildlife refuge that makes for a worthwhile day trip by boat.

Eating Out
Puntarenas is a fishing port, and the food follows accordingly: ceviche, grilled fish, and seafood soups dominate. The open-air stands along the Paseo de los Turistas are the most atmospheric places to eat — try a ceviche of corvina (sea bass) or a plate of camarones al ajillo (garlic shrimp). The market area near the ferry terminal has cheaper, simpler options. The town is not a destination for fine dining, but for fresh seafood at low prices it is hard to fault.

Getting There
Puntarenas is about two hours from San José by car or bus along the CA1 and then the Costanera highway. Direct buses run frequently from San José's Terminal Puntarenas (Calle 16, Avenida 10/12) — journey time is about two hours. The bus drops you at the main terminal near the market, a short walk from the ferry docks and the Paseo.
By car from San José, take the CA1 west and then follow signs toward Puntarenas — the route is straightforward. Parking in town can be tight near the ferry terminal during peak hours.
There is no commercial airport in Puntarenas; the nearest airports are Juan Santamaría International in San José and Liberia Airport in Guanacaste.
