Puntarenas is more transit hub than destination, but that undersells what it offers. The long waterfront promenade, the ferry crossing to the Nicoya Peninsula, and the boat trip to Isla San Lucas are all legitimate reasons to spend a day here. The Golfo de Nicoya at sunset, seen from the western tip of the peninsula, is genuinely beautiful.
