San José is the natural base for exploring Costa Rica. Most major attractions — volcanoes, cloud forests, Pacific and Caribbean coasts — are within a few hours by bus or shuttle. The Rain Forest Aerial Tram east of the city offers a gentle canopy experience. The artisan town of Sarchí, northwest of the capital, is the best place to buy the hand-painted oxcarts that are Costa Rica's most iconic souvenir. Guayabo National Monument, about 85 km east, is the country's most significant pre-Columbian archaeological site.
