San José's dining scene has improved dramatically since the early 2000s. The centre still has plenty of cheap sodas serving casados and rice-and-beans plates, but Barrio Escalante and Barrio Amón now support a genuine restaurant culture with Central American and international influences. Reservations are recommended for the better places on weekend evenings.
