Getting There

The main entry point is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), 17 km northwest of central San José in Alajuela. Bus services and taxis connect the airport to the city centre; the journey takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic. Official red-and-yellow taxis from the designated rank charge a fixed rate. For reaching other parts of Costa Rica from San José, two domestic airlines (Sansa and Green Airways) offer scheduled propeller-plane flights to around 15 destinations; the baggage allowance is typically 25 pounds per person. Charter helicopter services are also available. Long-distance buses to all parts of Costa Rica depart from several terminal areas near the Coca-Cola district.
